CANDIDATE’S DISSERTATION:
A MODEL FOR NURSES TO FACILITATE SUPPORTIVE CARE
TO MEN DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE CANCER AND THEIR
FAMILIES IN THE INTERMEDIATE HOSPITAL OSHAKATI:
A HOSPITAL BASED APPROACH
The doctoral study was undertaken and completed under the supervision of Prof.
Hans Justus Amukugo of the University of Namibia as a Main-Supervisor and Dr. Anna
Panduleni Kauko Shilunga as a Co-Supervisor.
The purpose of this study was to develop a model for nurses to facilitate supportive
care for men diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa) and their families. Pragmatism
worldview was used to achieve the study objectives. A convergent mixed method
consisted of qualitative and quantitative strands was adopted. The study population
include published research materials, men diagnosed with PCa, family members and
nurses. Data were collected through scoping review, individual face-to-face interviews
and assessment of health facilities. The study findings revealed that men diagnosed
with PCa and their families are not adequately supported in health facilities in terms
of individual, community service, institutional and health facilities related factors. Since
model development required concepts, central statements such as physical, social,
psychological, and spiritual were derived from the findings and justified in line with
Holistic Theory. The model was developed based on four theories, namely: Practice-
Oriented Theory, Systems Theory, Holistic Theory and The Nursing Process Theory.
The evaluation of the model was done in accordance with the criteria for evaluating
the nursing model, as proposed by Fawcett (2005). Guidelines were developed in terms
of aims and activities to address the challenges and barriers that hinder the facilitation
of supportive care for men diagnosed with PCa in health facilities. Based on the study
findings, recommendations are made in terms of nursing practice, nursing education,
and nursing research.
