GUIDELINES TO FACILITATE CLINICAL NURSING EDUCATION
OF NURSING STUDENTS IN THE TRAINING HEALTH
FACILITIESOF OSHANA AND OSHIKOTO REGIONS, NAMIBIA
The study was carried out under the supervision of Prof Hans Justus Amukugo (Main
Supervisor) and Dr Ester Mulenga (Co-Supervisor) at the University of Namibia.
Clinical nursing education is the basis of nursing practice and gives nursing students
opportunities to gain experience the art of nursing. It aims to develop and improve
professional knowledge, skills and clinical competencies of nursing students and
prepare them for their future professional roles. The purpose of the study was to develop
guidelines to facilitate clinical nursing education of nursing students in the training health
facilities of Oshana and Oshikoto Regions, Namibia. The development of the guidelines
was necessitated by the challenges experienced during facilitation of clinical nursing
education. The Pragmatic worldview guide this study since mixed method approach
employed in to apprehend the problem. A mixed method approach that convergent
parallel design using interviews, focus group discussions and questionnaires were used.
The participants and respondents were registered nurses, nursing students and lectures.
The findings of the study revealed best practices as well as challenges that are related
with system, student nurses, registered nurses, and lecturers affecting facilitation of
clinical nursing education. The guidelines were developed based on the findings to
support registered nurses and nurse educators in facilitating clinical nursing education.
The study recommended that nursing administration should provide adequate human,
material, and equipment resources for effective facilitation of clinical nursing education.
It further recommended the developed guidelines be validated and implemented in
the practical setting.
