of and recommendations for responding to the educational needs of
San learners: semi-systematic literature review
Background: Universal primary education has been widely advocated
as a great equalizer. Education for All (EFA) framework has
emphasized education as a right of every child and has encouraged
various countries, like Namibia, the context of this study, to improve
access to education. The national education statistics indicate that San
learners’ school performance and attendance has remained
significantly lower than the national average regardless of the national
efforts to improve access and inclusion.
Aim: The purpose of this review is to present an overview of recent
research on San learners’ formal education.
Methodology: Our theoretical framework is based on the concept of
culturally responsive teaching defined as an approach that uses
“cultural characteristics, experiences, and perspectives of ethnically
diverse students as conduits for teaching them more effectively.
Results: The identified challenges under the three broad categories:
1) Realities of post-colonial societies; 2) Gap between progressive
policies and education practices; 3) Irrelevant and foreign education
system.
Recommendations: It is recommended to working proactively
towards inclusive society, improve access to appropriate education,
developing partnership skills and processes that strengthen
