3. Kaereho, C & Mbukusa, N., Impact of climate change on road
traffic and accidents: a case for Namibia
Background: Climate change is a global environmental challenge that
causes natural disasters, poses a threat to sustainable development and
human life. Change in average weather conditions, combined with
extreme weather events, are altering the climate system, resulting not
only in unpredictable rainfall and temperature patterns, but also in an
increase in the occurrence of climate-related events such as floods and
droughts. Road traffic accidents can have far-reaching social
consequences. A road traffic accident is a situation that occurs because
of the collision of one or more motorized vehicles, such as cars and
motorcycles. Road traffic accidents can cause injuries, property
damage, deaths, and public transportation congestion, disruption, and
delays.
Aim: This investigated the correlation between road accidents and
climate change.
Methodology: Using a mixed methodology and a case study design,
the study focused on the Namibia Motor Vehicle Accidents office for
snowballed sample that has gone through the ordeal of climate change
and its effects on vehicles, roads and surviving families.
Results: The results showed that climate change has serious effects on
the political, social, and economic welfare of the Namibian societies.
Climate change also affects the general environments.
Recommendation: It is recommended that further studies are done to
focus on climate change management to benefit the road users, motor
vehicle accidents, and the general environment. Changes in road
safety policies, road infrastructure, and driving habits are required to
adapt to the effects of climate change.
Keywords: Climate Change, road traffic accidents, weather,
