TEARS OF SUFFERING

Wangmo leaned her head on her sister’s shoulder and
sobbed. “I would. Please don’t worry.”

“Everybody makes mistakes. When you make a mistake,
they might scold you.” Ana Zangmo sighed heavily,
trying to control her sobs. “But do not react. Remain
silent.” She sniffed. “I am happy, as well as sad; happy
because you are venturing out on your own, and sad
            because you are leaving me.”

“Please don’t say that, Ana,” she said Wangmo,
embracing her. “I’ll visit you often.”

            Wangmo a twenty-ngultrum note. Here, take this…”

Wangmo couldn’t utter words to console her sister. She
joined her in sobbing, for her heart couldn’t bear the
            pangs.

Ana Zangmo’s lips quivered. She hid her face in her
coarse palms and sobbed. “I am so sorry for having little
to give you, but you know our condition.”

“You don’t have to take trouble, Ana,” consoled
            Wangmo.

Alas! The two sisters sobbed in each other’s arms until
the public transport truck arrived. As the truck moved,
