relationships; that is, in the words of Carl Rogers, to have unconditional

positive regard for each and every person you meet. An atmosphere of
complete and utter acceptance is essential if accurate empathy is to be

achieved. Your own experiences prove to you beyond doubt that you are
at the very least, equal in imperfection to the person who stands in front

of you!... but the only difference is that instead of denying it, you become
dedicated to admitting it as an inevitable facet of the human condition.
You must also never lose sight of one important fact: that although you

learn as a matter of course to apply your hard-earned awareness skills in
the continuing process of your own personal development, it is not part

of your brief to try to change others, or to comment in any way on their
personal characteristics. Neither, of course, does it entitle you ever to

criticise, to make judgements or to give advice. You'll find the more you
understand the people you work or live with - the more you recognise

their processes as similar to your own - the easier it will be for you to
accept them just the way they are.
