sum of the input of your five bodily senses: what you experience as the
reality of what's going on in the presenting environment and any given
moment. The original assumption was that as any given perceptual field
consisted of a complex arrangement of atoms, then anybody standing at
the same viewpoint was bound to see the same things. However, the
experiential approach of gestalt psychology early in the last century
subsequently indicated that each of us perceives only that which is
relevant to whatever our inner needs may be at that particular time. So
although your perception is your interpretation of reality, the truth is
that there is no ‘there’ out there! Someone else positioned where you
are right now would perceive the world differently, because their needs
would be different.
The fourth function, intuition, comes from within. It’s the ability to
know something, without any clear idea of how you reach that
conclusion. This happens to all of us. When you meet someone new, you
may have a gut reaction to them - your intuition tells you something
about them. You may instantly be accessing the personal store of
information which is buried deep inside you, or deeper still, in the part
of you which is in some way the sum experience of everybody who's lived
before you. Intuition is entirely inward in orientation. It's the realm of
the collective unconscious, that great storehouse of the archaic images
known as archetypes. These don't originate as sensual perceptions, but
arise spontaneously as psychic entities - a pantheon of gods that assume
human form in response to the deepest yearnings of the human soul.
The intuitive facility is stored in a very ancient part of your brain, the
limbic region, in the form of images; blueprints of human survival,
encoded in your human DNA and passed down through the generations.
Whenever you as an individual comes across a situation in the real world
that threatens your survival or security, the intuitive input will never fail
to come up immediately with the best possible response. There is no
threat that it hasn't come across before - the optimal response to every
bad thing that has ever happened in the history of the human race is filed
