Innovative nutrition strategies to support the vulnerable in the community
12.45 – 14.00
The care of nutritionally vulnerable adults in community settings is complex and challenging. The prevalence of malnutrition in the UK continues to be unacceptably high and tackling malnutrition is currently estimated to cost £19.6 billion per year (NIHR Southampton BRC and BAPEN). However, the potential for good nutrition to improve the health of the vulnerable population is signi cant.
This seminar will examine the frameworks in place across the community to identify and support those at risk of poor diet and hydration. It will focus on the growing ageing population, who are at higher risk of malnutrition, across all care settings. Speakers will examine how standards of nutritional care for older people can be improved.
Tackling malnutrition in the community
BAPEN estimates that malnutrition affects over 3 million people in the UK,
of which 1.3 million are aged 65 and over. It often goes unrecognised and untreated. This session will provide the latest insight into how malnourished individuals or those at risk of developing malnutrition are identi ed and treated. Expert speakers will review the frameworks required to put nutrition and hydration at the heart of care in the community.
