And just like a doting mother, it’s hard for Herringdine to pick her favorite plants. Her preferences run from plants that are not very showy to those that grow quite tall or produce huge flowers. Zinnias are her “tried and true” because they live through the whole brutal Georgia summer. She loves hollyhocks and peonies, although she hasn’t had a lot of luck with the latter in the unforgiving Southern climate.
Herringdine is also a big proponent of moss. Several areas in her yard are devoted to the plant that serves as the per- fect ground covering for shady areas, stays green year- round and provides a peaceful setting.
Moss is one of those “zen kind of things,” said Herringdine. “You just sit down there, and it’s just very quiet and very peaceful. You’re looking at tiny little plants and you find tiny little things that you weren’t expecting, such as the wing of an insect or an acorn that you’ve never noticed.”
During planting seasons, Herringdine devotes long hours to her gardens. These days, she spends a couple of hours a day pulling
