children Jay and Helen, moved to Oconee County in the summer of 2000, the grounds surrounding their new home paled in comparison to the garden she had left behind.
There were some foundation plantings and a small hole where a pond used to be surrounded by a dozen trees planted two feet apart.
Herringdine quickly realized that some of those trees had the poten- tial to be 80 feet tall and that the previous owner really didn’t know what he was doing when it came to landscaping, so she de- cided to tear it all out and start from scratch.
More than 20 years later, the end result is stunning.
She knew that she wanted flower beds, so she began by getting her landscaper to prepare a couple of beds with good soil, providing a strong foundation for the next 20 years of planting.

A few years ago, Herringdine pulled out all the overgrown ‘lollipop’ hollies and replanted. She got her handyman to build some window boxes, which are planted with Angelina, million bells and verbena. The shrubs are peonies, Festiva Maxima, dwarf English box wood, three miniture roses, plum yews, dwarf Mexican petunias, hollyhocks and Angelica blue juniperus chinensis.
