year career in print sales. With more time on her hands, she decided to “go for it” and poured herself into her hobby.
She joined the Ladies Garden Club of Athens and began to put greater emphasis on native plants. Now, one portion of her garden is all natives.
“I have been focusing on native plants lately because they’re so important for our pollinators and butterflies,” Herringdine explained.
She has also recently gotten serious about ridding the wooded areas of her property from invasive plants, because they can limit the native plants from growing. Pulling up privet, Japanese honeysuckle, Chinese wisteria, English ivy and other invasives takes effort but is important to the ecology of Georgia.
Herringdine talks about her favorite plants as if they were her children. “I love Veronica Georgia Blue. It’s a very low ground cover but it’s got these gorgeous bright and tiny blue flowers. It’s already blooming now. It will bloom for a good long while and might even bloom back when it starts getting cooler in the fall.”
