CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Since 2017, the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Mississippi State University has installed energy-efficient natural gas equipment inside their 14,236-square-foot house through the Mississippi Division’s SmartChoice rebate program. The fraternity has received $3,150 in rebates and saves 10,300 therms of natural gas annually.
Beginning in 2017, Kappa Sigma lowered their utility costs by switching existing pre-rinse spray valves to low-flow energy-saving spray valves installed by Atmos Energy at no cost. In 2018, the fraternity placed low-flow aerators and showerheads in all restrooms and sinks for every living space. In 2019, Kappa Sigma received a rebate for the installation of an energy-efficient convection oven in the kitchen. In 2020, the fraternity installed a 92% AFUE natural gas furnace, a tankless water heater, and seven Nest Learning thermostats.
Kappa Sigma President Max Ault said: “We are committed to making our fraternity one of the most energy-efficient facilities at Mississippi State. We appreciate the rebates from the Atmos Energy SmartChoice Program and the savings from our new energy-efficient natural gas equipment.”
“To see college students like the Kappa Sigma fraternity become invested in energy efficiency for their campus home and understand that natural gas is the energy choice to help them reach their goal of becoming a model for others to follow is very encouraging,” added Mississippi Division Marketing Vice President John Duease.
“I’ve been fortunate to be on both sides of the energy efficiency program,” added Engineer John Stowers, who was Kappa Sigma president in 2018-2019. “As a chapter member, I saw the outstanding rewards of implementing energy- efficient natural gas equipment for our house. Now, as an Atmos Energy employee, I appreciate the importance of partners like Kappa Sigma. I look forward to working with the fraternity in the future.”
Since 2014, the Atmos Energy SmartChoice Program has rewarded more than $2 million in rebates to customers for installing energy-efficient natural gas equipment in their homes and businesses throughout Mississippi.
