she had with her “Pioneer” partners in the field ministry: Jo Ann
Lee, Wilma Turner, Beulah Screws and many others. Unfortunately,
she had to stop pioneering in 2002 to care for her daughter, Val-
erie, and she did so lovingly and without complaining.
Alene loved singing. Her favorite song to sing was, "The Way We
Were", which she sang at all of our family reunions. After the death
of her beloved husband, Alfred, she and Valerie moved to Atlanta,
Georgia to be closer to Michael and his family. Being with him, Cyn-
thia and the boys was such a wonderful time; and seeing two great
-grandchildren, Nicole and Legend, brought tremendous joy. While
in Atlanta, she was a member of Oak Hill Congregation and devel-
oped wonderful friendships there. She really enjoyed spending time
with Demetra, Ashton, Alaysia, Nate and Augustine. Sisters Eliza-
beth Watkins, Augustine Morrow, Juanita Nickens and Ingrid Mapp
became dear friends. Alene and Valerie moved back to West He-
lena, Arkansas after the loss of her son, Michael, in death. It was
good to be home.
Alene departed this life on December 1, 2020 following a brief ill-
ness. She was not afraid because she had faith in her heavenly Fa-
ther's promise that there would be a resurrection. She knew that
she would see us again. (John 5:28, 29) We have beautiful memo-
ries of a beautiful lady! We will always love Momma!
Along with her husband, Alfred and son, Michael, Alene lost both
parents: Lem and Estella Thomas; and all of her siblings: Virlee
Gray, Theodis Thomas, Evania Ragar, Marie Brown, Omar Thomas,
Opal Jean Bohanan and Clara Riley prior to her death.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters, Sharon Fields of
Little Rock Arkansas and Alfreda Valerie Valentine of West Helena,
Arkansas; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Thomas of Covington, Georgia;
grandsons, Michael Valentine; Marcel Valentine and his daughter,
Nicole; Maurice Valentine and his son Legend, all of Covington,
Georgia; a nephew who is like a brother, Frederick Emerson of De-
troit, Michigan; a sister-in-law, whom she considered a sister, Pearl
Thomas and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
