4. ABSENCE OF SPECIALISED
NETWORKS
Eco-Schools are currently the only organisation providing
CCSE support for ALN settings through an ALN cluster
meeting. Once a year teachers from ALN settings meet to
share how they run Eco-Schools. However, the uptake
from teachers in ALN settings is low. This could be due
to the infrequency of the meetings or the timing of
the meeting – lunchtime. ALN teaching staff are more
likely to miss Continuing Professional Development
(CPD) opportunities during the day as they have to
be present for learners at all times. This meeting
could be held more regularly and if the number of
participants rises, participants may benefit from
splitting meetings into age groups taught so that the work
shown is relevant to everyone (e.g. primary and secondary
provisions have separate meetings).
It is important that all ages and stages of learners are represented in these meetings in
the future, and that teaching staff from ALN early years’ settings have the opportunity to
communicate and share ideas on a regular basis. In the most recent Eco-Schools ALN
cluster meeting, one routes for learning teacher felt lost trying to translate examples given
in the meeting to her own primary setting and couldn’t see how they might achieve any
Eco-Schools awards. While these suggestions would greatly benefit ALN teaching staff,
Eco-Schools do not currently have the capacity to make these changes and therefore
would need additional funding to effectively enhance the support they provide.
“Because this [CCSE] comes under that [CfW]
quite a lot I think that would be a massive thing,
wouldn’t it? Because it goes across it all and then
if you did join everybody up, it could be linked to
their Eco-Schools and green flag award as well
and those that are like aiming for platinum or the
different levels like everybody could support each
other then “
