6. CASE STUDIES
Pockets of CCSE activities exist across ALN settings in
Wales, as exemplified by the case studies throughout this
report. In the case studies, specific factors have
contributed to teachers’ ability to run such activities.
6.1 INNOVATE PROJECT
The Innovate Project is part of the Caerphilly County
Borough Council Youth Service and follows the Youth
Service Curriculum. While they do not follow the
Curriculum for Wales, the types of activities delivered
through the project are age-appropriate, rooted in real-
world relevance, and can be easily incorporated into
schools and units that do follow the Curriculum for
Wales.
For example, one young person requested sewing and
upcycling lessons, expressing enthusiasm to teach their
peers a skill learned from family members and
highlighting the importance of reusing and reworking
clothing.
In the lead-up to Christmas, learners
upcycled donated wine bottles into
decorative items that were then sold. Using
furniture donated by the local community,
learners were also taught to upcycle items
such as a dressing table.
They explored the environmental benefits
of reuse and repurposing, then auctioned
their completed pieces to raise funds for
other community projects.
It is important to note that learners at the
Innovate Project are based in a youth led
EOTAS provision, not a special school.
These learners, therefore, may be more
mentally and physically capable than other
learners represented in this report.
