Nonetheless, the Innovate Project has delivered a wide range of environmentally and
socially conscious activities that contribute positively to learners’ development and their
communities. These include a ‘preloved’ fair where donated items were distributed free
to disadvantaged groups, community litter picks, and an art project creating blankets
from crisp packets to support people experiencing homelessness.
Hands-on, learner-led activities such as these engage young people meaningfully,
enabling them to develop practical skills while also learning about environmental and
social impact. These experiences can enhance learners’ communication, creativity, and
sense of connection to their local communities
6.2 YSGOL CRUG GLAS, YSGOL PENYRHEOL STF
AND AWEL AMAN TAWE
An art project based on the environment was created by Ysgol Crug Glas special school,
Ysgol Penyrheol STF and Awel Aman Tawe. Awel Aman Tawe provided financial support
for professional artists to work with learners from both Ysgol Crug Glas and Ysgol
Penyrheol, resulting in an interactive art exhibition at the Volcano Theatre in Swansea.
Despite having profound and multiple learning disabilities, learners at Ysgol Crug Glas
were able to take part in creating art through sensory engagement with items such as
coal, sand and lights.
More able learners from Ysgol Penyrheol were able to engage further with professional
artists to develop large canvases depicting the learners’ understanding of renewable
energy. A song combining the voices of learners from Ysgol Crug Glas and Ysgol
Penyrheol was also created for the exhibition with the support of a professional artist.
