ITEM 6 – ANY OTHER BUSINESS
PAYMENT TO TEACHERS FOR MARKING SBA
231. FAC heard that at the first meeting with Jamaica and CXC it was decided that teachers
felt that their effort within the classroom should contribute to the final output of the
candidates and therefore SBA as a new initiative was started. The Jamaican Teachers
Association then encouraged other teacher associations to join and become a part of the new
initiative.
232. FAC heard that the matter of teachers marking the SBA was not a CXC issue as the
Ministries of Education had indicated that CXC could not pay their teachers for work that was
done on a daily basis. CXC was only responsible for paying teachers on contractual terms.
233. FAC discussed the proposal that the term “SBA group work” should be defined as
groups consisting of five or less candidates and all SBAs must be done in groups. As an
example, if a school contained five candidates one SBA would be submitted; and if it
contained ten candidates two SBA would be submitted.
234. FAC was advised that SBAs were structured to help improve learning, not to measure
learning. When used only as a tool to measure learning, then the original use of SBA was
defeated. The other purpose was to give the teachers in the classroom the flexibility through
their professionalism to use their skill and techniques for the learning and teaching of the
candidates.
235. FAC further advised that the proposal be clearly written and submitted for further
revision.
236. The Chairman thanked the members of FAC for their participation and contributions
to the meeting. The meeting was then adjourned.
