An Unforgettable Experience
Mom washed it out a second time and asked,
“Do you feel better?” I saw a very worried look
come over her face when I cried out, “No, it feels
worse!” She had realised that the injury was serious
and that I needed a doctor’s attention so she
immediately me rushed me to our local hospital.
When we got there that unbearable hospital smell
almost made me feel quite sick, but I had to bear it.
A slim, handsome doctor examined me and told us
that removal of the tiny bit of dry leaf causing me
so much pain required the use of equipment not
available there. He said that we should consider
seeking medical assistance from the eye specialist
at a well-known medical centre in Antigua.
This did not surprise us because the 1995 Soufriere
Hills Volcanic eruption had destroyed Montserrat’s
well-equipped Glendon Hospital in Plymouth. Since
this catastrophe, all major medical procedures are
undertaken in Antigua. I was later discharged with
a patch over my eye in order to keep it safe from
dust and further injury.
