My Experience of the La Soufriere Volcano

Other explosive eruptions occurred days apart and

ended on the 22nd of April 2021. However,
volcanic activities continued for a period of four

         months.

After the explosive eruptions discontinued, my

family took a chance and went back to visit our

home. I accompanied them. We travelled in a van
as far as Georgetown, then walked approximately

eight miles to our village because the roads were

impassable for vehicles. In some areas, I walked

through ash that covered my ankles. I was

astonished by the vast destruction. I saw trees
standing with their branches hanging downward

and some without branches looking forlorn,

buildings including houses collapsed or totally

destroyed from the weight of the ash, dead animals

exposed to heat of the sun and fallen utility poles

with live wires on the ground. The main roads
looked like footpaths. The mountain ranges were

all exposed and looked gray from my vantage

point. The only form of life that was seen was that

of the few skinny animals, mostly dogs that had
