Retirements. Mr. K. P. Narayan retired in March. For thirty years he had worked
for the Bahrain Government, during the latter part of his service as Secretary to the Adviser.
During his many years in Bahrain he was an outstanding figure and his departure was very
greatly regretted by those who he served so faithfully and by people of all shades of opinion
with whom he was in close contact.

Foreign Visits and Visitors. H.E. Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa, His Highness’s uncle, did a
tour around the world, travelling first to Europe, then to America and to the Far East.
Their Excellencies Shaikh Isa and Shaikh Khalifah, His Highnesses sons, with two of their
cousins, paid a visit to America and then spent some time travelling in Europe.
Among the persons who paid brief visits to Bahrain, mostly in transit, were The President
of the Turkish Republic, H.M. King Hussein of Jordan, Sir Anthony and Lady Eden and
Lt./Coloncl Jamal Abdul Nasir. Ships of the French and Indian Navies visited Bahrain
during the year.

Rai Sahib Nair. In March the death occurred of Rai Sahib Nair, one of the senior officials
in the Customs Department. Before taking service with the Bahrain Government he had been
in the service of the British Government in Iraq and on retirement he was granted the title
of Rai Sahib.
Public Health and Education Committees. In October His Highness gave an interview to
two members of the “Higher Executive Committee” and agreed to the plan to form committees,
half the members being elected and half nominated, to deal with matters concerning Public
Health and Education. There have been many such committees in the past consisting of
elected and nominated members, the oldest institutions on these lines being the Manama and
Muharraq Municipal Councils. These two committees were intended to replace the com­
mittee which His Highness had previously appointed to make recommendations to the Govern­
ment about Public Health, Education and Security.
