                                                          LABOUR EXCHANGE
                                                      (Report by Mr. Ibrahim Khalfan)
This report covers a period of six months only because the Labour Exchange came into
                                being in July, 1955.
In the first two weeks of July the work of the Exchange was performed in Bab-al-Bahrain
as there was no suitable Government building that could be used. Later His Highness agreed
to lend temporarily one of his flats situated .to the south of the British Bank of the Middle
                                East in Manama.
On 16th July the opening of the Exchange was announced officially and the work was
transferred to new office, since then the Exchange has functioned in its present place.
The method of operation of the Labour Exchange is as follows :—
                                    1. When employees visit the Exchange full details are taken of their occupation, previous
experience, references regarding place of work, age, etc., etc.
                                    2. Employers are asked to notify the Exchange of their requirements, giving in all cases
the following informationName, address, number and type of employees required, wages
and hours and actual time and place of work, whether transport is provided.
                                    3. When ah employee is thought to be suitable to fill a vacancy with an employer, he is
sent to him with a form.
If the employer finds him suitable for his purpose, he sends the form back to the Exchange
with the remark “Accepted" on it; if, after a test, the employer decides that the candidate does
not meet all the requirements for the post he returns the form to the candidate with a remark
“Rejected” and requests the candidate to return it to the Exchange.
