The above figure does not, include the visits of the warships of H.B.M's Boya|
Navy, nor the Light Tender ‘Nearchus’ on duty. The decrease in the numbers of
tanknhips may be attributed to the fact that crude oil is no longer exported, and some
of the tankships are very large vessels with considerable cargo capacity.
Also, it should bo noted that the visits of B.I.S.N. Coy’s Steamers comprise
the weekly up-and-down calls of the subsidiary mail steamers, and the fortnightly
up-and-down calls of the 60-ealled fast mail service, the subsidiary mail being very slow
which is actually a slow service. The weekly calling of the cargo steamer from India
is vital to the mercantile well-being of the State, but the mail service is unsatisfactory,
in that mails are carried only by the subsidiary service with the result that there is a
regular weekly mail service from India, and generally a fortnightly mail service from
Iraq, this latter bringing the English second-class mail matter. This curious
position is somewhat relieved by the air-mail service which carried first-class mail
matter. The interest of the State of Bahrain would be well served by (1) the
omission of the subsidiary mail service, or perhaps its fortnightly calling here without
mails, and (2) a weekly up-and-down calling by the Fast Mail carrying mail matter
in addition to cargo.
I give below a comparison of the quantities of cargo brought by the above
steamers.
