Negotiations were completed with the Disinfestation Limited, England, to carry out an
Anti-Rat campaign in the new year. This operation is being looked forward to with great
eagerness as rodent infestation is on the increase and causes much damage and discomfort.

Periodic inspections of various foodstuffs were carried out and necessary action taken where
the commodity was found unfit for human consumption. Condemnations includcd4,951 bags of
flour, 10,000 lbs. of fresh fruit and vegetables, 195 bags of rice, 15 crates of eggs and about
       40,000 lbs. of tinned food.

Sanitary Inspection carried out during the year.

Port and Quarantine. During the year no case of quarantinable disease entered Bahrain
and no ship, aircraft, dhow or launch was placed in quarantine. One indigenous case of
smallpox occurred amongst the Muscati employees of the Bahrain Petroleum Company Limited
but no further cases resulted from it. The immunity now enjoyed by the local population against
this disease may be attributed to the high vaccination state of the community as a result of the
large scale vaccinations carried out in both town and villages over the past few years. It was
interesting this year to make use of the Bahrain Radio for announcements regarding the
vaccinators’ visits and other public health matters.
The new Manama Passenger Jetty was opened on 25th March, but through a misunder
standing, the Health Office was wrongly sited. It should be placed at the sea-end of the Jetty
so that incoming passengers can be segregated from the general public until they have been
passed through quarantine. Control at Muharraq Airport suffers from the same disadvantage
but provision has been made to remedy this defect in the plan for the new air terminal building

The number of people entering Bahrain, their places of entry, and the number without
valid certificates of vaccination were recorded as follows :—
