The oil embargo and the price rises in the latter months of 1973 unleashed a

vast flood of publication in the Western world on Arabia, Persia and the Gulf,
the bulk of it being concerned with oil supplies and the financial implications of
the price increases. Much of the publication was, by the nature of things, of
ephemeral interest or value, and much, inevitably, was repetitive or derivative
in content. For these reasons, and because it would have been humanly
impossible to do otherwise, I made no attempt while writing this book to keep
track of everything that was being published relative to the subjects treated
here. The list of books, articles, journals, etc. which follows, therefore, is a
highly selective one, restricted (with only a few exceptions) to those works

which were of direct use to me. Needless to say, I have also drawn for certain
          material upon unpublished sources.
