Introduction

In this fifth issue of Arabian Studies the editorial policy is to
continue to cover a wide range of Arabian topics. In these days of
ever more concentrated specialisation it appears to be desirable not
to become cribbed and confined or think in terms of each subject in
its own separate box. Our policy is to give even broader coverage
          than at present whenever possible.
A constant editorial problem is transliteration, in which we
attempt to be consistent. We would entreat contributors to follow
the system of transliteration published in each issue; this would
save us much time and often research. Established spelling such as
‘Mecca’, ‘Medina* are accepted, but as spellings for other places
and personal names will be established through this publication, we
wish to attain the maximum standard of accuracy. If contributors,
especially those from Arabia, are uncertain as to how to follow our
system, they are asked to provide new names in Arabic script fully
vowelled. The editors undertake to see that these are correctly
transliterated into Roman script. We shall be grateful to
contributors for their co-operation in this tiresome but necessary
          matter.
