Currency.—Kuwait has no currency of its own, but uses
Indian rupees and rupee notes, Maria Theresa dollars, which
averaged an exchange value of 1-13 per 100 United States dollars
in 1020-27 and 1-W per 10(1 dollars in 1027-28, are used for all deal
ings with the Arab interior.
There is a British post and telegraph office.
Trade.—The principal imports in order of value in 1927-28
were:—(1) Sugar; (2) cotton piece-goods; (8) rice; (4) coffee.
The following table shows the imports from the principal
countries into Kuwait in the three years named : —

Accotdmg to customs statistics India supplies the vast majority
r.f the four principal articles of imports, hut it may be considered
dint sugar mainly comes from java and that Great Britain supplies
at least a quarter of the piece-goods.
Thr principal exports are specie and pearls respective!v.
