Nubian mercenaries at all times formed an n. part of the Egyptian army. About
2000 b.c. they were mainly employed as archers, au.xiliarv to the regular units of Egyp­
tian infantry, who were armed with spear and shield. These wooden figures, about a foot
high, are from the grave of Mesehti, a baron of Assiut in upper Egypt, who lived about
this date.
