         He further agreed that no other taxes or dues, apart from those
         specified, should be imposed on British goods.
           In Article 7, the Shaikh undertook to protect the lives and property
         of British subjects residing in his country. And in Article 8, he under­
         took to receive in his country a British Agent to whom should be
         entrusted the ‘transaction of such business as the British Government
         may have with’ Qatar, and the care of the ‘interests of British traders
         residing’ in the ports of Qatar.
           In Article 9, the Shaikh agreed to establish a British post office and
         a telegraph installation in his territory ‘whenever the British Govern­
         ment should hereafter desire them’. By Article 10, the British Govern­
         ment promised to protect the Shaikh, his subjects and his territory
         against ‘all aggressions by sea and to do their utmost to exact repara­
         tion for all injuries’ that the Shaikh or his subjects, ‘may suffer when
         proceeding to sea upon [their] lawful occasions’. And in Article 11, the
         British Government promised to protect the Shaikh and his subjects
         against ‘unprovoked’ acts of aggression by anyone who is not a
         subject of the Shaikh.
