                       unlined channels. The maximum range of crops is grown in winter,
                       including tomatoes, aubergines, cabbages, cauliflowers, lettuces,
                       onions, potatoes, carrots, marrows, herbs and peppers. In winter, it is
                       very rare for less than 35 per cent of a holding to be cropped and as
                       much as 65 per cent of the area of a holding may be under vegetables.
                       The situation is very different in summer when usually no more than
                       40 per cent of the holding is given over to crops, mainly cucurbits and
                       melons. In some cases the proportion of cropped land may be as low
                       as 10 per cent. The main reason for this low proportion of summer
                       cropping is that, because of the high evapotranspiration rates and the
                       general high porosity of the soils, the pumps cannot supply more
