                    Mr. Smith, with view to impress on tho minds of the Natives at Bushire,
                    a full conviction of tho sentiments of Government, and of their decided
                    determination to support Mohedi Ali Khan, in tho station ho now holds, and to
                    guard against tho sacrifice of the important objeots of his mission to the
                    unjustifiable onpricc of an individual.

                        Ordered, also that the Secretary transmit a copy of tho abovo resolution,
                    for tho information, of Mr. Smith, positively enjoining him, at tho same time
                    to proceed on the vessel abovemontioned, up to Bussora and advising that the
                    Commander will Lave furthor directions not to allow him to laud, on his
                    return when touching at Bushire. Mr. Smith is, also, to bo exprossly ordered
                    to delivor over the Bushire Blag to Mohedi Ali previous to his quitting tho place,
                    as he ought, without presuming to exorcise his own judgment in a point which
                    did not rest with him. Rosolved that a copy of tho same resolution be trans­
                    mitted to Mehodi Ali Khan, to whom as well as to Shaik Nasser the President
                    is requested to address suitable letters, on the occasion.

                                 The Governor of Bombay to Mirza Mbuedi An Khan.
        Appointment of
        Harford Jones,   The Court of Directors having with the approbation of^His Majesty’s
        Resident at
        Baghdad.    Ministers, appointed Harford Jones,* Esquire, Resident at Bagdad, for tbe
                    purpose of counteracting the machinations of the Erench, and that gentleman
                    having written to and desired the interposition of this Government on
                    the occasion of some differences that exist between tho Baghdad and Muscat
                    Governments, he has, in answer, been, desired to write to you, on any
                    such subjects, if they should eventually prove necessary in which case you
                    must not fail to exert your influence, with the Muscat Government to preserve
                    unanimity with that of Baghdad, to the end that the united exertions of all may
                    be the more efficaciously exerted agaiust the common enemy the Erench. I
 I                  may here add, that we have a Squadron of His Majesty’s Ships blocking up
                    the straits of Babel-Mandel, and another on the Malabar Coast, so that under
                    the Divine Blessing to our efforts, the Erench oannot send men on stores to
                    their.Eriend and the Sultan, and I am in great hopes, that even with him
                    the pacifio system the English wish to maintain in India will not be interrupted
                    but we are preparing if necessary.

        Imam of Maikat.  The Pacha of Baghdad has since the date of my last address made
        ik?ideotlMked for! certain political requests to  me. Early in  the month of July, a  report

                       It may be mentioned here that tbe Bombay Government bad sanctioned on 301 h November  1783 tho
                    I* cationi of a Native Agent at Baghdad on a salary of Rl,ICO p.  a. for tho purpose of transacting  business
                    wnh the Pschx on bekalf of tbe Company. Coja Marcar who had performed tho duties of an Agent for the
                    Company from July 1781 vltb remuneration was granted arrears of pay at tbe above rate.
