Tllo decrease is owing to the crop of the dale produce having beon less
                                          favourable that the preceding year.
3Iost of the fish which vras usually brought from Sur toMaskat for export
went to India direct from that port and hence the decrease.
In tho last year’s report it was noticed that the production was large, but
growers could not bring the samo to coast

towns for export, owing to the hostilities
which were being carried out by the local Government against the Bani Riyan*
in whose country, the Jchal Akhder. or Green mountains, the best fruit is
grown such as pomegranates, grapes and peaches. The samo reasons hold good
for the decrease this year as the revolted tribe has not been subdued or brought
into subjection by the Sultan. The tribesmen, however, managed to convey the
fruit to Suhar ports and Debai for export.

The decline is due to the general depression of export trade and to the fact
XuceEasccca. that the port of Sur is being resorted to
for shipment of merchandize to Zanzibar
              and East Africa.
Balance of Trade.—The value of total imports amounts to Rs. 98,46,560
and that of exports to Rs. 42,45,450, leading one to snppos that tho balance of
trade against the country is more than half of the value of imports, but such
is not the cose as nearly all the arms and ammunition are re-exported to the
Gulf ports and a large volume of merchandize leaving tho Sharkiya and Jaalan
districts goe3 from the Sur Bunder of which no statistics of trade arc available.
General Trade.—Excluding arms and ammunition by the importation of
winch the country at large is not benefited, except few gun merchants and
which may be taken as on transit to other countries, and, disregarding the
figures of specie imported and exported on which duty is not levied, the general
trade of the country has declined by Rs. 11,18,870 or 15 per cent, instead of
gain of Rs. 34,76,815 or 32 per cent as noted under the heading of M Total
