to sit one on each side of him. They left together, Bishr on a
fine white marc, the old man riding a mangy camel. After going
some way, the younger man offered Shaikh Abdulla his mount,
but the old man rebuffed him, saying that he had only accepted a
favour in the audience chamber because the Amir had asked him
to do so, and he would never accept anything from one who
supported his grand-nephew.
In 1858, he set off on his last journey to Muscat to appeal once
more to the Sultan. He was about eighty years old, ill and
disappointed. He reached Muscat, and died there a few days
after his arrival. His descendants still live in Saudi Arabia, and
visit Bahrain every year, to receive an annual subsidy from the
Shaikh.
