                                                ‘Aqd al-La’al fi Tarikh Awal: A Critical
                                                Study

                                                Abstract

                                                At the beginning of the twentieth centu-
                                                ry, Bahrain witnessed great cultural ac-
                                                tivity that was reflected in the intellectu-
                                                al output of the time. Names appeared
                                                in  the  various  fields  associated  with
                                                culture, thought, and literature, and the
                                                prevailing  sentiment among  intellectu-
                                                als  and  politicians  was  that  the  estab-
                                                lishment of a national identity and the
                                                push  towards  modernization  required
                                                that attention be given to the heritage
                                                and history of Bahrain.


                                                Among the writers who contributed to
                                                the  recording  of  Bahrain’s  history  was
                                                Mohamed  bin  ‘Ali  Al-Tajer,  the  author
                                                of ‘Aqd  al-La’al  fi Tarikh  Awal.  His  work
                                                is divided into four sections: the first is
                                                entitled “The Ancient Geography of Bah-
      5 th  Research                            rain, Its Islands, and the Condition of Its
                                                Inhabitants  Before  Islam”;  the  second
                                                “The  Ancient  History  of  Bahrain  Until
                                                the Spread of Islam”; the third “Bahrain
                                                in  the  Islamic  Era  Until  the Year  1783”;
                                                and  the  fourth “The  History  of  Bahrain
                                                from the Beginning of the Reign of the
                                                Al  Khalifa  Until  the Year  1923”. The  au-
                                                thor relied on a number of works deal-
                                                ing  with  history,  geography,  language,
                                                and  heritage  alongside  his  being  con-
                                                temporary with some of the events, par-
                                                ticularly those of the reign of Shaikh ‘Isa
                                                bin ‘Ali Al Khalifa. His approach depend-
