THE TRAFFIC BRANCH
(Report of Inspector J. Hyde, in Charge, Traffic Section.)
Vehicles and Accidents.—The year 1369 showed a fair increase in road accidents as compared
with the year 1368, also an increase in the number of persons injured, but the number of fatal accidents
was little more than half of the previous year.. Of the number of accidents recorded by the Traffic
Branch, 163 in all, 22 were concerned with and reported to police by the Bahrain Petroleum Company.
As most of the traffic is confined to the few good surfaced main roads and considering the number of
vehicles using them, the number of accidents is not serious. Six traffic posts, for the control of traffic,
are maintained at various points in Manamah and Muharraq.
The number of vehicles on the roads in Bahrain shows a steady yearly increase. New regis
trations for the year total 445, but against this, 115 motor vehicles were scrapped as unroadworthy.
The previous year only 28 vehicles were scrapped. There was an increase of 482 in the registration
of pedal cycles for 1369 bringing the total number registered to 2,938. The number of accidents
involving pedal cycles for the year was only nine. All Public Service vehicles, buses and taxis, are
subject to a thorough technical test before re-registration and mechanically they are probably the best
class of vehicles on the island. Very few accidents have resulted from mechanical defects other than
badly maintained brakes. The Traffic Branch also made a more thorough check on privately owned
vehicles. In all, about 900 vehicles have so far been examined.
The total prosecutions of the Traffic Branch in both courts were more than double than in the
previous year, but the total amount of fines was considerably less, particularly in the Bahrain Court.
The fines imposed in the Bahrain Court during 1368 for traffic offences on 78 offenders amounted to
Rs. 2,884, whereas in 1369, although 155 persons were prosecuted for traffic offences the fines imposed
amounted to Rs. 1,181 only.
