In doing this however, the Government had to subsidise the price of barter sugar to the extent
of Rs. 2,00,000.
As in the previous year, the import of dates into Bahrain was allowed free of all Customs charges,
and barter sugar at a subsidised rate given in exchange.
To help Local Growers however certain quantities of Bahrain dates, unripe and dry dates,
were allowed for export. This action did not affect the price of dates which remained at about the
same level as in the previous year.
Fish supplies during the year were again well short of requirements, much of the fish caught
in nearby waters being taken to Saudi Arabia where, it was reported, double the controlled price in
Bahrain, was obtained.
The bazaar was well slocked throughout the year with all types of imported consumer goods,
but as in the previous year there was an overall increase in prices of about 25 per cent, and present
indications are that higher levels will be reached.

CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT
(Report by Mr. G. W. R. Smith, m.b.e., Director of Customs.)
The revenue collected by the Customs Department from all sources, including boat licences,
exceeded last year’s revenue by Rs. 20,74,926 and exceeded the amount which was anticipated in the
budget by Rs. 29,41.741.
This large increase in Customs revenue was due, in the main, to increased rice and tea shipments,
and to an all round increase in the cost of goods at source.
Improvements to Customs Facilities :
During the year under review, one new warehouse with a storage capacity of about 3,000 tons,
dead-weight capacity, was completed.
One Coventry Climax Fork Lift truck, with a lifting capacity of two tons to a height of 12 ft.
was added to the existing cranage available.
A large area of sea was reclaimed, on which one warehouse 280 ft. long and 60 ft. wide, and one
warehouse 175 ft. by Co ft. are to be erected in 1371.
