            During the year under review the Government spent Rs. 86,34.000, on buying rice and sugar to
       be issued as rations to the people of Bahrain. The increased expenditure of Rs. 26 lakhs over the
       previous year was due to an increase in the price of both rice and sugar at source.
            During the first ten months of 1369, the price of rationed rice to the public was Rs. 1-6-0 for
       four lbs. during the year under review the price of rationed rice ranged from Rs. 1-8-0 to Rs. 1-12-0 for
       four lbs.
            Similarly the price of sugar in 1369 for the first seven months was Rs. 1-8-0 for four lbs. and
       Rs. 1-12-0 for four lbs. for the last five months, whilst this year the price has ranged from Rs. 1-12-0
       to Rs. 2-4-0 for four lbs.
            The following statement shows the scale and price of rations issued to the public throughout
       the year.

             In order to ensure plentiful supplies of meat for the month of Ramadhan, during which month
        the consumption of meat is higher than any other month of the year, from the 1st Shabaan, the month
        before Ramadhan, the Government doubled the barter rate of sugar, with the result that during
        Shabaan and Ramadhan, the following record quantities of live stock were imported from Persia
