The first floor is given up entirely to dormitories, masters’ quarters and the Warden’s flat.
The ground floor contains common rooms, Staff room, reading room and library, mosque, sick bay
and Medical Inspection room, games rooms, kitchens, etc., and cloakrooms.
The design of all the elevations is plain, no attempt being made to add any decorative detail,
except for some "Arabic panels" over the main entrance, as it was hoped that the general sense of line
and the use of repetition of features would produce a building both dignified and functional in charac
ter. The Hostel is built of coral stone finished with white plaster, and the first floors and roofs arc
of reinforced concrete, laid as continuous spans over steel joists. Flush doors arc fixed throughout,
and the floors, generally, arc of cement. The Hall floor is of red tiles and the dais is of teak. The
Hall is panelled to a height of 7.0 ft with mahogany and teak panelling. The roof of the Hall is of
corrugated asbestos, carried on steel trusses, to the underside of which a panelled ceiling is fixed. From
outside, most of the roof is hidden behind a rather high parapet wall.
The whole compound, in which the new Secondary school also stands, is enclosed by a diamond
mesh wire fence. Garages, servants’ quarters and cycle sheds have been added ; and playing fields
for football, volley ball and basket ball, etc., arc projected.
The wrought iron gates were supplied by Messrs. Gardner & Sons Ltd. of Bristol, the steel
windows by Messrs. Williams & Williams Ltd. of Chester and the sanitary ware by Messrs. Twyford
& Sons. The building was designed and built entirely by the Public Works Department, the over
seer in charge of construction being Mr. Salahuddis, and the total cost was Rs. 10,86,540.
