The revenue collected by the Customs Department from all sources, including boat licences,
exceeded last year’s revenue by Rs. 15,81,291/-, and exceeded the amount which was anticipated
in the budget by Rs. 27,23,032/-.
This large increase in Customs revenue was due to the increased costs at source of rice,
flour and coffee and to very heavy imports of cement and Dutch sugar. Cotton, woollen and
silk piece-goods also increased in price at source, during the middle part of the year, but were
cheaper towards the end of the year.
During the year there was again an increase in the number of local craft calling at Bahrain,

in the main the increase was from Persian ports. There was also a substantial increase in the
number of ocean going vessels calling at Bahrain in 1371, both in Freighters and Tankers. The
increase in the number of Freighters calling at the port, may, however, be attributed to the fact
that a great many of them now call at Bahrain on their homeward voyage for bunkers only.
A glance at the number of Bills of Entry and Export Shipping Bills, dealt with in 1371, will
still further emphasise the growing importance of Bahrain as one of the principal trading
centres in the Persian Gulf.
Accidents—within Port Limits.—On the 2nd March, 1952, a Saudi Arabian country-craft
laden with a cargo of iron bars, while in port awaiting Customs clearance for al Khobar, Saudi
Arabia, capsized and sank due to a strong shamal. The cargo was later salvaged and shipped
to its destination. The craft was later salvaged, repaired and returned to service.
The Light Tender vessel paid her usual visits of inspection to the lights and buoys.
General.—The estimated revenue for 1372, Rs. 84 lakhs, although less than the revenue
collected for 1371, has been determined by signs of a slight downward trend in prices of most
commodities being imported into Bahrain.
