1 ADMINISTRATION REPORT OP THE TP.RSIAN GULP POLITICAL

appeared from his Idlers that lie wished lo send an expedition there by
sea. He eventually came to Bushire in Her Majesty’s Ship Beacon to make
known his views and wishes personally to the Resident, to whom he
declared that he had not meditated any movement by sea, but desired
permission to act by land and, to a certain extent, support to his pro
ceedings, especially asking- that the British Government should under
take to prevent the Sultan of Muscat taking the part of tho garrison
of Fajeyrah. The Shargah Chief was advised to arrange his dispute
with his feudatories at Fajeyrah by means of negotiation or arbitration
of allied Chiefs, and there is some prospect of this being effected.
Shaikh Salim-bin-Sullan returned to Shargah in Her Majesty’s Ship
Woodlark, and was treated on board, both the Beacon and Woodlark, with
                    much kindness and courtesy.
The Chief of Abu-Zhabbce, Shaikh Za’ecd-bin-Khaleefah, proceeded
to Mecca on the pilgrimage and returned in safety. He had previously
been on a visit to Bereyrace. His son, Khaleefah, paid a friendly visit
to the Chief of Bahrain, and received a present of two horses.
The Government Agent, Ilajee Abdur-Rahman, incapacitated from
age and infirmity, has retired on a pension. A permanent successor has
                    not yet been appointed.
Her Majesty’s vessels have paid occasional visits to this part of
                    the coast during the year.
                         The pearl fishing was satisfactory.
The following table gives an estimate of the population of the
chief ports on the Pirate coast, number of boats, &c.:—
