grave offences ; as an example all persons who are convicted of being drunk or in possession of intoxi
cating liquor arc sentenced to 6 months’ hard labour and persons found in possession of drugs such
as opium and hashish arc punished by 12 months’ hard labour. The Senior Bahrain Court exercises
jurisdiction to deal with crimes of all kinds and has the power to pronounce the death sentence, which
is inflicted by shooting, or to order rigorous imprisonment, simple imprisonment, fines and whippings,
the last punishment being usually ordered in the case of boys and youths. When judging serious
criminal cases the court is guided by the Sudan Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code though
these codes have not been adopted by the State.

No persons who are not Bahrain subjects arc allowed to appear in the Bahrain Courts as
” Wakils ” and only those Wakils who are granted licenses by the court are permitted to practise.
The Police undertake all prosecutions in criminal cases on behalf of the individuals who have suffered
by a crime and they also represent the State in state prosecutions.
