                          HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

                   The independent Sultanate of Muscat and Oman covers an
            area of some 82,000 square miles in the south-eastern corner of the
            Arabian peninsula; and its half-million or more inhabitants arc pre­
            dominantly Arab except in the twin ports of Muscat and Matrah
            where much of the business community is Indian and Pakistani in
            origin, and where there is also a large Negro population, descended
            from the slaves imported from Africa.
