Muscat Post Office (1965)
Throughout the 18 years of British Postal administration, from
April 1st, 1948, to April 29th, 1966, there remained only one post office,
the legacy of previous administrations, in Muscat. It was originally
situated on the ground floor of the Consul-General’s residence (a common
practice in the Gulf area); but, in 1956, or early 1957, it moved to the
ground floor verandah of the Clerical Officer’s residence in the same
compound. Following the “posting” of a bomb during the Oman
rebellion in 1958 the two Letter Boxes fitted in the wall were masked
with steel plates which permitted the posting of letters only!
