Election Night. Democratic Headquarters, Ithaca (1968) View of Cascadilla Gorge with Risley College, from Suspension Bridge (2006)
Midnight, Democratic headquarters, downtown Ithaca. One of those nights
when you could sense that history was being made—in this case, as it turned
out, bad history. Against all odds, Hubert Humphrey, the much-maligned
Democratic candidate for President, was leading Republican Richard Nixon.
Hence the smiles. However the jubilation was short-lived. When we Cornell
undergrads woke up the next morning and saw the front page of “The Cornell
Sun” slipped underneath our doors the front page, showing a beaming Nixon,
told differently.
