An Expensive Mistake
Did you see that British Airways have just been fined
$230 million by the Information Commissioner’s
Office (ICO) for breaching the GDPR data protec-
tion laws?
Announcing the fine, Information Commissioner
Elizabeth Denham, said “People’s personal data is
just that – personal. The law is clear – when you are
entrusted with personal data you must look after it.
Those that don’t will face scrutiny from my office to
check they have taken appropriate steps to protect
fundamental privacy rights.”
Not only is it our responsibility to respect our fellow
workers and guests’ personal information. If we fail
to have robust policies and procedures, the GDPR
law allows a company to be fined a maximum of 4%
of its worldwide turnover. For Delaware North, a slip
up by the UK could cost the company as much as
£150 million, nearly twice as much as the UK turns
over in a year!
If you would like to know more about GDPR and “People’s personal data
to ensure you are operating safely and legally please is just that – personal”
keep your eye on Hot Press as we run a regular series
of updates over the next few months.
