Why are you interested in the Director of Public Works position with the City of Sacramento?
Tell me a bit about what you know about the City.
The Director of PW position - I have been with the City since 2005 - left for about 3 years to do some
consulting. A fantastic organization - has treated me really. Well. It's a group of people I really enjoy
working with. As a Director of Public Works - it's the pinnacle of my career. In terms of what I know about
the City of Sacramento - I probably know more than some of the external candidates. I've been involved
in our original services group. We have an operating budget of $174m - the Department has 7 divisions.
Great working relationships with all those folks. City has been around for 170 years. We are the capital
of California. It's a City I have worked and lived in for 20 years now.
Please describe your most recent position and day-to-day responsibilities.
I'm currently working as the Interim Director - I oversee the Department including the 7 divisions, our
operating budget. Human resources, procurement, quality control. We have a homeless crisis. We are
working on setting up homeless shelters. I oversee the transportation group, our vision zero traffic safety
program. We are working with a variety of our labor unions. Another thing we are doing is gearing up in
2020 for a sales tax initiative in Sacramento county. Projects and maintenance of roads.
Please describe a project in which you played a major role in creating pathways for
improvement for those in your community.
I would probably point to our homeless community. We have two sites that we have identified. One of
them is in the South area, the other one is under an interchange that is owned by CalTrans. The role I've
played is in negotiations with CalTrans to secure that land and streamline the environmental plans.
Bringing the skills that I bring - I can bring those tools to bare for a project that will bring the folks in our
community shelter before the winter months. It's been a place where I've been successful.
Please describe your experience in evaluating innovation and operational procedure utilized
in a City department and your approach to staying at the forefront of industry.
I would point to my time as the Division manager of our Transportation Division as Traffic Engineer. We
own about 800 traffic signals in Sacramento. They are a great platform for technological innovation.
Transit is becoming more important. Traffic signals are the piece of equipment that orient the right away.
Right now we are working with Verizon on a smart city solution with high-end cameras that run analytics
in the background - they are gathering data - and we have a team that is evaluating that technology.
What we've done is setup some benchmarks for what we would like to see this technology do. If the
computer says- 300 cars went through this intersection, we will do the account and make sure it actually
happens. That's one example. We do that quite a bit.
The forefront of industry - we are a member City - the National Association of Transportation Officials. I
think it's really important to engage in those types of organizations - compare notes- what technologies
they have deployed - probably the most important part of staying at the forefront.
Please describe your experience in the areas of public transportation and traffic reduction.
I've worked extensively with our local transit partner - we have a JPA here that I have worked with
extensively over the years. Most prevalently - engineering projects in partnership. We have been
collaborating with them extensively on a streetcar project. I have been the lead with our City, working
