The Red Well-Read Reader

                                                                                                       Story 225
                                     Thanks To Maude

Maude knew at once that the “diamonds” were fraud –

        actually worthless gaud.

Why did Maude suspect fraud? Because of the nervous way the salesman hemmed

and hawed, and his slip of the tongue – he called her a “ broad.”

So thanks to Maude, whom we laud, the police were able to arrest

                         this fraud !

                                                                                                       Story 226

                                                       Don‛t Scoff

At the mention of work, the lazy boy oft would scoff, un-

less the work were very soft.

Well, one day he started to hiccough. So he went to the

water “trough” and began to quaff. His boss, ticked off,

thinking that he was likely goofing off, said, “That’s once

too oft !” And discharged him right off.
