fragrances is unknown but as they provide no benefits in terms of skin-care, it is probably
a good idea to simply avoid them wherever possible.
Synthetic Colors:
It is unknown how safe the long-term use of synthetic colors might be. They can be
labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and number. As with synthetic fragrances,
they serve no useful purpose related to skin-care and so are also probably best avoided.
Mineral oil:
This is a mixture of petroleum derived hydrocarbons that is used as an inexpensive base
in some products. It has the potential to block off the pores of skin leading to the creation
of blackheads. It may also interfere with normal perspiration and other skin functions.
Ethanolamines (MEA, DEA, TEA):
Common pH stabilizers but when exposed to oxygen/air they can form other substances
which may be irritating and/or toxic.
Parabens (e.g. Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl and Butyl Paraben):
Used as preservatives that inhibit microbial growth and extend the shelf life of products.
There is strong evidence to suggest that some may serve as endocrine disruptors.
Nanoparticles: (Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide)
Nanoparticles are ultra-fine particles that possess special physical properties due to their
extremely small size. Though the majority of large scale studies have found them to be
safe for topical use in such products as sunscreens, there is justifiable concern regarding
their application through spray devices as once inhaled and in the body, they have the
ability to evoke many harmful systemic effects.
The use of such aerosol products should be avoided.
