Retinols stimulate the production of collagen and cellular proliferation within the skin's
dermal layer. This also encourages cellular turnover and, ultimately, a fresher
complexion.
It should be noted that even at the relatively low concentrations of these products that are
encountered commercially, retinol and alpha-hydroxy acid have the potential to produce
allergic reactions or irritation of the skin so care in their use, especially when they are
used initially, is recommended.
As a final element, a comprehensive skin-care routine can include the use of peptide and
growth factor agents. Peptides, which are fragments of protein, work by stimulating cells
to produce products such as matrix proteins which help to firm the dermal layer and
reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Growth factors, which are proteins, stimulate dermal
cells to reproduce thus provoking greater cellular turnover and, ultimately, thicker,
younger looking skin.
Peptides and growth factors are often associated with stem cell based formulations as it is
from this type of cellular base that many of them are derived. As with products
containing DNA repair enzymes, those containing growth factors and peptides are
relative newcomers to the skin-care product market.
