CARIMAC co-leads Communication and Public Education Programme for national energy project

diversifying its energy supply and improving energy efficiency and conservation across all sectors of the economy. The policy is hinged on the understanding that Jamaica’s economic growth will be enhanced by less dependence on imported fuel and more efficient and effective use of energy.
The communication component led by CARIMAC and Egis Eau translates this policy for Jamaicans, to strengthen public understanding, support and favourable action on energy issues. The CARIMAC-Egis Eau designed programme should guide all national energy communication initiatives and related public awareness activities. The ‘big idea’ is to integrate the programme’s framework, branding (for example, logo), promotional materials (such as banners, brochures, mascots) and tools (media monitoring mechanism and media toolkit, for example) into individual organisation’s energy efficiency and conservation initiatives and campaigns. This would:
• indicate the organisation’s support of the programme,
• sustain the salience of the NEP, its visions and goals in the
public sphere, and
• reinforce the message that Jamaicans must conserve
energy to promote national development.
Over the two-year lifespan (April 2013 – March 2015) of the consultancy, the team improved the communication and coordination capacities of the main implementing partners. This facilitated the formation of an energy communication task force; strengthening of public relations planning processes around key energy calendar dates; internal readiness planning; and the validation of a media monitoring framework through media research.
This project represents one of numerous national and regional initiatives in which CARIMAC has provided technical leadership and project stewardship.
