Independence in April 1980 changed things dramatically and for a while Zimbabwe was the new international darling and the Tengenenge com- munity was restored and grew again under the patronage of Blomefield.
Vukutu had struggled through the war years and ended up after Independence in a residential house in Milton Park in Harare. Bill Burdett- Coutts built up a large permanent collection and it was possible to see early works of some of the artists. By the mid-1980s, even though Burdett-Coutts was still a Director, the gallery was being run by artist Olivia Burdett-Coutts and sculptor John Takawira.
Post-independence galleries: Matombo and Stone Dynamics
In the mid to late 1980s, two new galleries came into being in Harare – Matombo and Stone Dynamics. The Director of Matombo Gallery, the late Roy Cook, had an ambition to contract artists like European galleries so that he would be able to acquire all the work of the artists. In return he felt that he would be able to promote them better. However
